Interview originale

Q) What are the recent projects that you are working on?

A) I haven't been working on anything except "Supernatural" for several months. There are some other projects that may happen, but nothing is set on any of them. I will probably do a single performance of my play Sidekick in Milwaukee early in 2012 and I have an offer for a film to shoot in Melbourne, Australia, but I have not decided whether to do it or not. I still work when I can on my book-in-progress on the life of actor George Reeves and I have some other writing projects. But right now, my only clear and present work is juggling "Supernatural" with raising my little girl.

Q) Please tell us what is new this season on "Supernatural" and with your character Bobby.

A) I can't tell you too much without getting in trouble. As the first three episodes that have aired so far this season can attest, Castiel appears to be gone, many of the hunters' resources are gone, too and a whole new slew of bad guys are actively trying to destroy Sam, Dean and Bobby. Whether they succeed is the gist of the show. So, you'll just have to keep watching. I can say, however, that some real shocks are ahead and some very pleasant surprises, as well.

The rest of the interview after the break

Q) What originally made you want to be a part of the show?

A) I wanted to be part of "Supernatural" because they wanted me to be part of it. It was just another job when it first came along and not one that I saw any future in. I'm very pleased at how it turned out, but there was no particular decision-making involved, other than being offered a job and accepting it gratefully.

Q) What continues to challenge you about the role?

A) What challenges me on the show are the usual things like the long hours, the lack of sleep and the recurrent need to haul my body up hills, throw it against doors or wrestle with monsters when my body would much rather be in bed! Playing Bobby is fun, not a challenge in the sense of being difficult, but it offers enough challenge to be interesting and enjoyable.

Q) The cast has such great chemistry on the show! How do they continue to maintain such intensity with one another?

A) We're actors! That's what actors do! It helps that we genuinely like one another, but after six and a half seasons we all know ourselves and our characters very well and the intensity you describe gets pulled on like a comfortable old suit.

Q) From your time filming "Supernatural," what have you found to have been the most difficult scene for you as an actor, either emotionally or physically?

A) The most difficult scenes? Physically, it would probably be either screaming my lungs out in that closet in "Dream a Little Dream of Me" or running at full speed to catch Aldis Hodge in "All Hell Breaks Loose, Part 1." They may not seem like much, but once you've done them a half dozen times for different takes and different angles, you don't feel like doing them ever again. Emotionally, probably the most difficult was playing the scene in "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid" when Bobby tells Sam and Dean how he feels having his dead wife back and begs them not to kill her. That one was draining and very difficult, emotionally, for personal reasons.

Q) Why do you think people continue to tune in to watch the show?

A) I'm told over and over by fans that they tune in to see the relationship between Sam and Dean evolve, and to some extent, the one between the boys and Bobby. The adventure/creepy/occult aspect of the show is a big draw, too, I guess. I like to think it's because we present all of those things very well, with technical and emotional skill, and that we catch the audience up in what's going on.

Q) What advice would you give to beginning actors?

A) My advice to beginning actors is to get involved in theatre, do as many plays as you possibly can and volunteer to do other things around the theatre until you can get into those plays as an actor. Beyond that, I recommend reading voraciously, ferociously and widely. Read plays and screenplays, in particular, but also actors' biographies, history and language and art--get a wide-ranging world view and know everything you can about acting and the theatrical life before you ever even worry about getting a job. The biggest advice I can give is that "THERE IS NO MAGIC ANSWER!" Not one successful actor can tell you what to do to become successful. All we can do is tell you what to do to be ready if opportunity comes. If opportunity knocks and you don't know what to do or why, then it might as well have not knocked. As Shakespeare said, "The ripeness is all." Be ripe. Be ready.

Q) You've done acting, writing and radio. Is there anything else you'd like to try your hand at?

A) Not really. I've directed a short film and that completely satisfied my limited urge to direct. I'm game to try just about anything in the world (once, at least). But I don't have any other vocations or avocations I'd particularly like to attempt. I like what I do. There are different opportunities I would like to have--I still dream of doing a play on Broadway, for example. I'd like to land the kind of role that wins awards--not for the award, really, but to be able to do that kind of part, something so rich that people sit up and take notice.

Q) What is something your fans would be surprised to know about you?

A) There are tons of things fans would be surprised to know about me. For the most part, the fans don't know, but the tip of the iceberg where I'm concerned. Some of it's maybe fascinating, but much of it is probably just boring. But there's a lot people don't know about me, even people who are close to me. If you're looking for something trivial, well, I used to make corn chips for Frito-Lay. I used to work for a paraplegic woman, getting her in and out of bed, feeding and bathing her. I spent my 21st birthday with my hometown best friend pretending to be officers and sneaking into the Officers' Club on top of Monkey Mountain in the harbor of Da Nang, South Vietnam. And I used to clean bird poop off the rides at Six Flags Over Texas. Is that what you had in mind?

Q) Where can people go online to learn more about you?

A) I have a website at https://www.lifesthatway.com. There's plenty of information there, as well as a chance to get my book, Life's That Way, which has lots of information in it!

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?

A) I'm grateful to everyone who has followed my work on "Supernatural" and other shows. I am very appreciative of the incredible kindness everyone has offered me. I hope I can live up to all that kindness.
