EXT. CONNOR BEVERLY BEHAVIORAL MEDICINE CENTER – DAY
The camera pans down the trees lining the building, and focuses up at an angle to windows with bars on them. We hear birds chirping, and it looks peaceful.
INT. CONNOR BEVERLY BEHAVIORAL MEDICINE CENTER – DAY
In ANNA’s room, with bars on the windows and plain white walls and bed and tables, very institutional looking. ANNA is sitting on the bed with her head cocked at an angle, looking up but staring at nothing, her eyes unfocused, but concentrating. We hear whispers of voices but can’t make anything out.
PSYCHIATRIST
Anna?
ANNA begins to snap out of her trance-like state and looks down.
PSYCHIATRIST
Do you know where you are? You’re at the Connor Beverly Behavioral Medicine Center.
ANNA fingers the bracelet around her left wrist with the hospital information on it.
PSYCHIATRIST
Do you know why you’re here?
ANNA shrugs, still seems out of it.
PSYCHIATRIST
Do you remember what you did?
ANNA nods her head slightly, it coming back to her.
PSYCHIATRIST
You were hysterical, it took four people to restrain you.
ANNA
I wa-… I was trying to warn them.
PSYCHIATRIST
Warn who?
ANNA
Everyone.
The PHYCHIATRIST is sitting a little past the foot of the bed in a chair, with a notepad and pen on her lap. She looks at ANNA curiously, like she is skeptical but doesn’t want to upset the patient.
ANNA
Forget it, it was stupid.
PSYCHIATRIST
What were you trying to warn them about?
ANNA looks at the PSYCHIATRIST, noting the look in her eyes.
ANNA
Look, I get it, you think I’m nuts. If I were you I’d think I was nuts, but it’s all true.
The PSYCHIATRIST looks at her warmly, trying to ease her fear and get her to talk.
PSYCHIATRIST
It’s okay, you can tell me, I’m here to listen.
ANNA
The end is coming, the apocalypse.
PSYCHIATRIST
The Apocalypse, like in the Bible?
While ANNA answers, the PSYCHIATRIST writes on her notepad.
ANNA
Kind of, I mean, same bottom line. This demon Lilith is trying to break the 66 seals, to free Lucifer from hell. Lucifer will bring the apocalypse. So…smoke ‘em if you got ‘em.
The whispers start up again, and ANNA tilts her head immediately, tuning into them, and spacing out from the PSYCHITRIST. The PSYCHIATRIST notices the change.
PSYCHIATRIST
Anna?
ANNA turns back from listening and toward the PSYCHIATRIST again, but doesn’t meet her eyes.
ANNA
Sorry.
PSYCHIATRIST
What were you doing?
ANNA
Nothing, just listening.
PSYCHIATRIST
So, you were saying that there are 66 of these seals in the world?
ANNA
No, no there are about six hundred possible seals, and Lilith only has to break 66 of them, and no one knows which 66 she’s gonna break.
PSYCHIATRIST
I see.
ANNA
That’s why it’s nearly impossible to stop her, and that’s why the angels are losing. That’s why we’re all gonna die.
EXT. ANNA’S ROOM – NIGHT
A tray wheels up to the door of ANNA’s room. We hear a woman’s voice over the P.A. system calling for a nurse. A male orderly takes a cup of pills, and opens the door.
ORDERLY
Time for your meds Anna.
ANNA is drawing in her sketch book.
ORDERLY
Anna?
ANNA stops coloring in her drawing and puts the colored pencil down and shuts the book. When she turns to face the orderly she reels back when she looks at him.
ORDERLY
What’s the matter sweetie?
ANNA moves off the bed and along the wall behind her, looking scared.
ANNA
Your face, what happened to your face?!
ORDERLY
I know.
The ORDERLY’s eyes flash black, he is a demon, possessing the orderly, and he smiles at her menacingly, ANNA looks scared, her eyes wide with fear.
ORDERLY
I’m dowright kissable, sh-sh-sh-sh-sh-sh-sh-sh-sh-sh.
The ORDERLY closes the door behind him while he is shushing her. ANNA looks at the big white dresser that is on the wall next to her. The ORDERLY locks the door, and ANNA breathes hard, and stares at the dresser and it moves along the wall, slamming into the ORDERLY and pinning him to the door, and slamming his head back into the glass, breaking it and he passes out from the blow to his head. ANNA makes her way over to the door and yanks it open just enough for her to slide through. She looks both ways down the hall and takes off.
END TEASER
INT. BAR – NIGHT
SAM is leaning on a pool table with a pool cue in his hand looking drunk and a big burly MAN is moving the balls around the table.
SAM
Alright come on man, just one more, just- just give me a chance to win it back.
MAN
It’s your cash.
DEAN walks up.
DEAN
Excuse me, my brother’s a little sauced to be making bets.
MAN
Hey, he insisted.
DEAN
Yeah, but you’ve already taken what? Two bills off him? I’m just saying.
SAM leans over the table toward DEAN still looking drunk.
SAM
Hey, shut up Dean, I’m fine.
DEAN
No, you’re not fine, you’re drunk!
SAM
Let’s make it five hundred.
DEAN
Five hundred?
SAM holds up a wad of cash.
MAN
Sure.
SAM slams the wad down on the table and exchanges a look with DEAN, they are clearly conning the guy.
MAN
Five hundred. You’re break.
The MAN sets the balls up, and SAM leans over to shoot, he gets at least two solids in the pockets and the MAN looks shocked. SAM stands up and spots RUBY sitting at a table across the bar. SAM clenches his jaw.
SAM
Keep the money.
SAM hurries toward RUBY, DEAN having not seen her, looks confused.
DEAN
Keep the money? What?
DEAN follows where SAM is headed with his gaze and sees RUBY, grabs his beer and follows SAM, a not so pleased look on his face. DEAN and SAM get to RUBY’s table.
SAM
Hey-
DEAN
Well, you got a lot of nerve showing up anywhere near me.
RUBY
I just have some info and then I’m gone.
SAM looks concerned.
SAM
What is it?
RUBY
I’m hearing a few whispers.
DEAN is not impressed, and jumps in sarcastically.
DEAN
Ooh, great demon whisperers, that’s reliable.
DEAN moves over to the bar, in earshot, but trying to stay as far away from RUBY as he can. SAM stands right in front of RUBY, his arms crossed, listening to her intently.
RUBY
Girl named Anna Milton escaped from a locked ward yesterday. The demons seem pretty keen on finding her. Apparently some real heavy hitters turned out for the Easter-egg hunt.
SAM
Why? Who is she?
RUBY
No idea, but I’m thinking that she’s important, cause the order is to capture her alive.
SAM looks surprised, demons don’t usually care about the wellfare of humans.
RUBY
I just figured that whatever the deal is, you might wanna find this girl before the demons do.
SAM nods his head and looks tentatively at DEAN over his shoulder.
SAM
Look, maybe we should check it out.
DEAN turns to RUBY and forces a smile, an irritated one at that.
DEAN
Actually we’re working a case, but thanks.
RUBY
What case?
DEAN
Uh…we’ve got leads, big leads.
Now it is RUBY who is sarcastic and doesn’t believe DEAN.
RUBY
Sounds dangerous.
DEAN
Yeah, well it sure ain’t goose chasing after some chick who for all we know doesn’t even exist just because you say she’s important.
RUBY
I’m just delivering the news, you can do whatever you want with it, far as I’m concerned, I told you, I’m done.
RUBY gets up to leave, but SAM grabs her arm, stopping her.
SAM
Wait, wait, wait, this hospital Anna escaped from, it got a name?
EXT. ROAD – NIGHT
The Impala drives down a rain slicked road.
INT. IMPALA – NIGHT
SAM is in the passenger seat and DEAN is driving. SAM is on the phone, talking into it.
SAM
Can I get a copy of the missing-person’s report?
DEAN is looking ahead, rolling his eyes and looking altogether irritated that they are following RUBY’s tip as rain softly spatters the roof and slides down the windows of the car.
SAM
Great, okay thanks.
SAM clicks his phone off and puts it down, talking to DEAN now.
SAM
Well, Anna Milton’s definitely real.
DEAN
Don’t mean the case is real and this hospital’s a three day drive.
SAM
We’ve driven further for less, Dean.
DEAN shakes his head disapprovingly.
SAM
You got something to say, say it.
DEAN
Oh, I’m saying it, this sucks.
SAM
You’re not pissed we’re going after the girl, you’re pissed Ruby threw us the tip.
DEAN
Right, cause as far as you’re concerned, the hell bitch is practically family. Oh boy, something major must have happened while I was downstairs, cause I come back and- and- and you’re BFF with a demon?
SAM
I told you Dean, she helped me go after Lilith.
DEAN
Well, thanks for the thumbnail, real vivid. You wanna fill in a little detail.
SAM
Sure, Dean, let’s trade stories. You first how was hell? Don’t spare the details.
DEAN looks at him knowing that he isn’t going to get into it, and they sit in tense silence for a few seconds. SAM stares out the windshield as rain hits it and the camera closes in on his face, a faraway look crossing it.
EXT. CROSSROADS – NIGHT
SUBTITLE: SIX MONTHS EARLIER
SAM is digging in the ground with his bare hands frantically, tears in his eyes. He slides a box into the shallow hole he has dug and covers it up and stands with a bottle of whiskey in his hand. He takes a deep drink off the bottle and shoves more dirt over the hole with his foot. SAM looks around and waits, but not patiently, and he looks pretty bad, sad, broken and drunk all in one fell swoop.
SAM
Come on! Where the hell are you?!
SAM chucks the bottle and it crashes into the sign post at the side of the road. As he watches it, he sees a man standing under a light by the side of the old country road, and faces him, it is a male CROSSROADS DEMON this time.
CROSSROADS DEMON
I was wondering whether to come or not, I mean, y- you shot one of my co-workers.
SAM blinks at him, trying to focus, clearly drunk, and starts to stumble toward him.
CROSSROADS DEMON
Don’t take this the wrong way Sam, but you don’t look so hot buddy. I guess burying your brother didn’t agree with you.
The CROSSROADS DEMON’s eyes flash red for a second. SAM comes to a big wooden spool by the side of the road, and throws his arms up, offering himself, but the CROSSROADS DEMON doesn’t budge.
SAM
Well?
CROSSROADS DEMON
Well, let’s see that special little knife of yours first.
SAM takes out the knife and slams it on the wooden spool.
SAM
No Devil’s Traps either, I’m not here to play games.
The CROSSROADS DEMON comes out of the light and starts toward SAM slowly.
CROSSROADS DEMON
Well, let me guess, you want to make a deal? And ‘round and ‘round the Winchester’s go.
The CROSSROADS DEMON gets to the wooden spool and leans on it, putting his hands flat on the top of it, looking relaxed, a mocking tone in his voice.
CROSSROADS DEMON
Sorry Sam, that’s not gonna happen.
SAM scoffs and nods, and in one fast motion grabs the knife and slams it down, pinning the CROSSROADS DEMON’s right hand to the wooden surface it is on. The CROSSROADS DEMON goes to grab his hand, but SAM takes the other hand and pins it to the wooden spool, holding it down as well and pleads desperately.
SAM
I don’t want ten years, I don’t want one year, I don’t want candy, I wanna trade places with Dean.
The CROSSROADS DEMON is in pain, but holds it together, shaking his head.
CROSSROADS DEMON
No.
SAM yells at the CROSSROADS DEMON.
SAM
Just take me! It’s a fair trade!
CROSSROADS DEMON
No.
SAM looks horrified as the CROSSROADS DEMON actually smiles at him.
SAM
Why not? Lilith wants me dead, just let Dean go and she can have me.
CROSSROADS DEMON
Don’t you understand Sam? It’s not about your soul. Dean’s in hell, right where we want him, we’ve got everything exactly the way we want it. You wanna kill me?! Go ahead, I’ve made peace with my lord.
SAM glares at him and we hear SAM grunt and the blade of the knife cutting through air.
INT. IMPALA – NIGHT
PRESENT DAY
Back in the car SAM comes back from the memory, and looks at DEAN like he is about to tell him what he was just thinking about, but when he sees DEAN is still seething, he decides against it and they continue to sit in silence as the wiper blades on the windshield squeak across and wipe the rain away.
INT. WARD 42 – DAY
At the hospital, the camera focuses on a sign that says: WARD 42, and the camera comes around the corner of ANNA’s room.
PSYCHIATRIST V.O.
Of course, I wanna help however I can.
SAM
The orderly has no recollection of Anna’s escape?
As we see DEAN and SAM in suits in the room talking to the PSYCHIATRIST, we see Sam standing in front of the PSYCHIATRIST talking to her, and DEAN looking around the room.
PSYCHIATRIST
Apparently she knocked him unconscious. Uh, the blow caused some amnesia, he doesn’t even remember coming into her room.
DEAN joins SAM.
DEAN
That’s a hell of a right hook to knock out a guy that’s got eighty pounds on her.
PSYCHIATRIST
We think she may have planned this, waited behind the door.
The PSYCHIATRIST makes her way out of the room and into the hallway, DEAN and SAN following.
SAM
Right, uh, you mentioned Anna’s illness was recent.
PSYCHIATRIST
Two months ago she was happy, well-adjusted journalism major, lots of friends; bright future.
DEAN
So what happened? She just flipped?
PSYCHIATRIST
Well, that’s the tragedy of schizophrenia, within weeks Anna was overtaken by delusions.
SAM
What kind of delusions?
The PSYCHIATRIST hands SAM ANNA’s sketch pad.
PSYCHIATRIST
She thought demons were everywhere.
SAM
Huh-
DEAN
Interesting.
SAM opens the sketch book and sees a couple of the window designs that ANNA was coloring when the ORDERLY came into her room right before she escaped. All the windows have crosses above them.
PSYCHIATRIST
It’s not uncommon for our patients to believe that mosters are real.
DEAN
Well, that- that’s just batty.
SAM turns a page and sees in bold black print: RAISING OF THE WITNESSES on a page, with the symbol of the seal it represents in the middle of the text. Under that page there is a draing of the witnesse being risen, their eyes empty. SAM and DEAN exchange a shocked look. SAM clears his throat as he turns another page and finds a drawing of SAMHAIN, and houses with jack-o-lanterns in front of them. The page above that says: SAMHAIN THE NEXT SEAL IS BROKEN. DEAN forgets they aren’t alone and talks to SAM.
DEAN
It’s Revelations.
SAM nods.
PSYCHIATRIST
Since when does the Book of Revelations have jack-o-lanterns?
DEAN
It’s a uh- it’s a little known translation.
PSYCHIATRIST
Ah, well, Anna’s father was a church Deacon, when she became ill her paranoia took on religious overtones. She was convinced the devil was about to rise up and end the world. I hope you find her. It’s dangerous for her to be out there alone right now.
SAM nods at the PSYCHIATRIST and DEAN looks down in disbelief, the PSYCHIATRIST doesn’t know how true that is if demons are after her as RUBY told them.
EXT. MILTON HOUSE – DAY
SAM and DEAN walk up the sidewalk to the MILTON house and take the steps simultaneously, going to the door. DEAN knocks on the glass inset of the door. No one answers and SAM looks in the driveway where the cars are parked.
DEAN
Maybe they’re not home.
SAM
Both cars in the driveway.
DEAN tries the doorknob that opens, and looks back at SAM who raises his eyebrows. DEAN opens the door and starts to enter the house.
DEAN
Mr. and Mrs. Milton?
SAM enters behind DEAN.
SAM
We’re from the Sheriff’s Department.
SAM closes the door as DEAN moves straight ahead and SAM enters the side room.
SAM
We just wanted to ask you a couple of questions.
The camera pans over two dead bodies on the floor, both the MILTONS’ necks are slashed and there are dried pools of blood coming from them. SAM sighs loudly and DEAN enters and sees the scene. SAM goes over to the body of MRS. MILTON on the floor, and kneels beside it touching something near it on the floor. He brings his fingers up to smell it and winces, grunting from the sour smell.
SAM
Sulfur, the demons beat us here. Whatever the deal is with this Anna girl-
DEAN
Yeah, they want her, and they’re not screwing around.
DEAN’s looking around and he goes to a stack of mail on the mantle above the fireplace.
DEAN
Alright, so’ I’m girl interrupted and I know the score of the apocalypse-
SAM notices something and stands up crossing to a picture of ANNA and her parents.
DEAN
Just busted out of the nutbox, possibly using superpowers by the way, where do I go?
SAM picks up the picture to take a closer look.
SAM
Hey, you got those sketches from Anna’s notebook?
DEAN
Yeah.
DEAN puts the mail back and starts to reach in his pocket, SAM starts over to him with the picture in tow.
SAM
Let me see ‘em.
DEAN pulls the sketches out of his inner jacket pocket and SAM stands beside him, DEAN hands him the sketches.
SAM
Check this out.
SAM flips to one of the colored pictures that ANNA had in her book, and SAM lays it beside the picture of ANNA and the Milton’s.
DEAN
She was drawing the window of her church.
SAM
Over and over.
The camera pans from the drawing to the picture, and it is almost the same.
SAM
If you were religious, scared and had demons on your ass, where would you go to feel safe?
EXT. CHURCH – DAY
The camera pans down the big window of the chuch that was in the picture and ANNA’s drawings. The camera angle changes to looking over thr right headlight and hood of the Impala to the front of the church. We can see SAM and Dean’s shadow’s in another big stained glass window going up stairs toward the big center window.
INT. CHURCH – DAY
SAM and DEAN come up stairs into the room behind a big stained glass window with their guns drawn. We see a reverse angle of the camera, showing the view of someone hiding in the corner, brething hard and watching SAM and DEAN approach with guns. SAM notices the movement behind the small piece of stained glass and nudges DEAN.
SAM
Dean-
They continue to move forward, and we see ANNA moving behind the glass. SAM notices he has his gun trained on her and that is probably not helping the girl be less scared, so he holds it up and puts it in the back of his jeans, and when DEAN sees him do it, DEAN puts his own gun away as well.
SAM
Anna? We’re not gonna hurt you, we’re here to help.
ANNA still doesn’t move from behind the stained glass plate she is behind.
SAM
My name is Sam, this is my brother Dean.
ANNA V.O.
Sam? Not Sam Winchester.
SAM and DEAN look at eachother confused, how does this girl know them?
SAM
Uh- yeah.
ANNA finally comes out, standing in front of SAM and DEAN, still looking a little unsure of herself.
ANNA
And you’re Dean.
DEAN looks at her not sure what to say.
ANNA
The Dean?
DEAN
Well, yeah…The Dean…I guess.
DEAN looks a little smug, and SAM catches it, rolling his eyes and facing ANNA again.
ANNA
It’s really you.
She now moves toward them slightly excited.
ANNA
Oh my God, the angels talk about you. You were in hell, but Castiel pulled you out and some of them think you can help save us.
ANNA looks at SAM, and pauses a moment not sure she should tell him.
ANNA
And some of them don’t like you at all.
SAM doesn’t look pleased, but ANNA looks back and forth between them now, finally putting faces to the names in her head.
ANNA
They talk about you all the time lately, I feel like I know you.
DEAN
So you talk to angels?
ANNA
Oh, no, no, no way, um, they probably don’t even know I exist. I just kind of overhear them.
SAM looks surprised.
SAM
You overhear them?
ANNA
Yeah, they talk and sometimes I just hear them in my head.
DEAN
Like…right now?
ANNA
Not right this second, but a lot, and I can’t shut them out there are so many of them.
DEAN
So they lock you up with a case of the crazies when really you were just tuning into to angel radio?
ANNA seems relieved that finally someone believes her and doesn’t talk to her like she is delusional.
ANNA
Yes, thank you.
DEAN nods, knowing the look that she probably got when she started telling people she hears angels, it is they look SAM and DEAN get when they tell people monsters are real.
SAM
Anna, when did the voices start? Do you remember?
ANNA
I can tell you exactly, September 18th.
DEAN looks at SAM, that certainly can’t be a coincedence.
DEAN
The day I got out of hell.
ANNA
First words I heard, clear as a bell: ‘Dean Winchester is saved.’
DEAN looks at SAM.
DEAN
What do you think?
SAM scoffs.
SAM
It’s above my paygrade man.
DEAN
Well, at least now we know why the demons want you so bad. They get ahold of you, they can hear everything the other side’s cooking, you’re 1-900-Angel.
DEAN laughs nervously and ANNA smiles a bit.
ANNA
Hey, um, do you know, are my parents okay? I- I didn’t go home, I was afraid.
Just then the door slams open beind them and RUBY enters.
RUBY
You got the girl, good, let’s go.
ANNA yells and backs away from RUBY, seeing her face.
ANNA
Oh! Her face!
SAM
No, it’s okay, she’s here to help.
DEAN
Yeah, don’t be so sure.
RUBY
We have to hurry.
DEAN
Why?
RUBY
Because a deomn’s coming big-timer and we can fight later Dean.
DEAN
Well, that’s pretty convenient, showing up right when we find the girl with some big wig on your tail.
RUBY
I didn’t bring him here, you did.
DEAN
What?
RUBY
He followed you from the girl’s house, we gotta go now.
SAM turns back toward ANNA and something catches his eye, and he points.
SAM
Dean-
DEAN follows SAM’s pointing hand and sees a statue of Mary, with the eyes crying blood. RUBY sees it too.
RUBY
It’s too late, he’s here.
DEAN moves toward the statue, drawing his gun and SAM grabs ANNA.
SAM
Come with me.
SAM takes ANNA to a back room, and opens a closet door for her to hide in.
SAM
Okay, stay in there, don’t move.
ANNA looks scared, but agrees.
ANNA
Okay.
SAM rushes back over to where DEAN is still staring at the statue bleeding tears, grabbing the holy water out of his jacket pocket. RUBY sees him.
RUBY
No Sam, you gotta pull him right away.
DEAN glares at RUBY, he doesn’t want SAM to use his powers.
DEAN
Whoa, hold on a sec-
RUBY
Now’s not the time to bellyache about Sam going darkside. He does his thing, he exorcises that demon or we die.
DEAN just looks at SAM, not fully prepared to deal with that, and SAM tucks the holy water flask back in his jacket pocket and faces the door. There are footsteps out side the door, and SAM stands, ready to attack as soon as he sees the demon. The door busts open and a man comes in, sneering at SAM. SAM puts his hand up and tries to exorcise the demon, and the demon starts to choke and he puts his hand up to grab his throat, but only for a second, then he coughs as his eyes go white and then back to normal and he smirks.
DEMON
That tickles.
None of them were expecting that, and they now look desperate.
DEMON
You don’t have the juice to take me on Sam.
The DEMON pulls at SAM with his hand in the air, and SAM flies forward and slams down the stairs the DEMON just came up. DEAn takes out RUBY’s knife and lunges at the DEMON.
DEMON
Hello again Dean.
They fight as RUBY takes off, she opens the doorof the closet and ANNA screams.
ANNA
Oh, no. No! No!
The DEMON gets the knife out of DEAN’s hands and continues to punch him, DEAN’s nose starts to bleed. The DEMON stops punching but holds DEAN up against a pillar.
DEMON
Come on, don’t you recognize me? Oh I forgot, I’m wearing a pediatrician.
The DEMON starts punching DEAN again.
DEMON
But we were so close, in hell.
The DEMON punches DEAN again, and DEAN leans up, bleeding from the nose and lip now, and looks up at the DEMON.
DEAN
Alastair
The DEMON (ALASTAIR now) laughs at him and punches him again. ALASTAIR turns around right as SAM comes at him, and plunges RUBY’s knife into ALASTAIR’s chest.
ALASTAIR
You’re gonna have to try a whole lot harder than that son.
ALASTAIR swings SAM around and bends down grabbing the knife in his chest. SAM grabs DEAN and the both look at each other than the big window to their left and make a run for it. ALASTAIR groans in pain and pulls out the knife as DEAN and SAM crash through the window, jumping through it to get away. ALASTAIR walks over to the window, and looks down, and then at the knife and walks away from the window.
INT. MOTEL ROOM – NIGHT
SAM is stitching a big horizontal gash in his upper arm with a needle and thread, blood dripping down his arm from the wound. As he puts the needle through the other side of the cut he groans in pain. DEAN is standing at the sink in the bathroom spitting out blood. DEAN takes a drink of water to rinse his mouth out and spits again as SAM keeps stitching.
DEAN
Are you almost done?
SAM
Ahh, I’m going as fast as I can.
DEAN
Good, cause you know, I got a dislocated shoulder over here.
DEAN crosses to the table in the room.
SAM
Yeah- I’ll pop it back when I’m finished.
DEAN takes the whiskey off the table to take a drink. SAM ties a knot, tightening the stitching so it closes the wound more and cuts the string with little scissors.
SAM looks at the bottle in DEAN’s hand and motions for it.
SAM
Gimme that.
DEAN hands the bottle to SAM and SAM pours some on the wound wincing when he does.
DEAN
So you lost the magic knife, huh?
SAM
Yeah, saving your ass, who the hell was that demon?
DEAN
No one good. We got to find Anna.
SAM
Ruby’s got her, I’m sure she’s okay. Alright, come on.
SAM gets up and DEAN braces himself with his good arm on the bed, leaning over so SAM can grab his left shoulder to put it back in place.
SAM
On three, one-
SAM snaps it back into place when he says one, taking DEAN unawares and making him yell in pain. DEAN walks back toward the bathroom, his face contorted in pain, the fall from the church window obviously wounding both of them badly. SAM puts a towel on his wound to try and stop the bleeding, and DEAN looks at him in the mirror, still in visible pain.
DEAN
You sure about Ruby?
DEAN turns around to face SAM.
DEAN
Cause I think it’s just as likely, she used us to find radio girl and then brought that demon in to kill us.
SAM
No, she took Anna to keep her safe.
DEAN scoffs at the thought and turns back around to the mirror.
DEAN
Yeah.
DEAN puts an ice pack on his shoulder.
DEAN
Well, why hasn’t she called to tell us where she is?
SAM
Because that demon is probably watching us right now, waiting to follow us right back to Anna again, that’s why he let us go.
DEAN laughs without humor, taking note of the state they are in.
DEAN
You call this letting us go?
SAM
Yeah, I do. Look, killing us would have been no problem to that thing. That’s why for now we just gotta lay low and wait for Ruby to contact us.
DEAN
Yeah, how’s she gonna do that?
SAM shakes his head, he doesn’t know how. DEAN turns away from the mirror and sighs.
DEAN
Why do you trust her so much?
SAM sighs, tired of repeating himself.
SAM
I told you.
DEAN throws the ice pack down on the sink and walks into the room.
DEAN
You gotta do better than that. Hey, and I’m not trying to pick a fight here, I mean, I- I really wanna understand, but I need to know more, I mean, I deserve to know more.
SAM resigns himself, and decides to tell DEAN all of the truth, what happened over the summer that made SAM trust RUBY.
SAM
Cause, she saved my life.
INT. MOTEL – NIGHT
SUBTITLE: SIX MONTHS EARLIER
SAM in the same clothes we saw him try to deal with the CROSSROADS DEMON in, is stumbling down the hall of the motel and goes into his room. He can barely stand he is so drunk and stumbles a few heavy steps forward into moonlight. We see his face, red rimmed eyes, and he just generally looks like hell. He turns back around and a fist hits his face, and it turns him around, and the GUY that hit him punches SAM again and then grabs him and holds him up as a WOMAN comes over quickly and while the GUY holds SAM’s arms behind his back, she knees him twice. She moves over to SAM’s side and reaches around SAM’ s back.
WOMAN
Thanks for keeping this warm for me Sam.
The WOMAN pulls out the demon-killing knife.
SAM
Ruby.
The WOMAN (now RUBY) stands back in front of SAM and points the knife at him.
RUBY
It’s nice to be back, where I was, even for hell it was nasty. I guess I really pissed Lilith off. Imagine my relief when she gave me one last chance, a ticket topside. And all I had to do was find you, and kill you.
SAM looks defiantly at her and shoves the GUY (another demon) off him and steps forward, challenging RUBY, getting in her face, with complete disregard for his own life.
SAM
Fine, go ahead, do it!
RUBY stares at him, and something in her eyes falters, and she reaches the knife back to plunge it in, but moves and stabs the other demon in the chest, saving SAM and killing the demon. SAM looks surprised and almost angry, RUBY looks at him.
RUBY
Grab your keys we gotta go, now!
SAM stands there looking stunned and out of breath.
EXT. ROAD – NIGHT
SUBTITLE: SIX MONTHS EARLIER
The Impala passes by a field, and the moonlight shines through the trees, reflecting light fog that is across the road and in the night air.
RUBY V.O.
You know what sounds good?
SAM is driving the Impala and RUBY is sitting in the passenger seat, smiling at their triumph.
RUBY
French fries.
RUBY looks at SAM and looks back out to the road ahead when he doesn’t look at her.
RUBY
I’m starving, and I just escaped hell, I deserve a treat.
RUBY still gets no reaction from SAM, who is staring ahead, ignoring her completely.
RUBY
You know a ‘thank you’ would be nice.
SAM
Who asked for your help?
RUBY
You have no idea what I’ve been through. When Lilith gets pissed, she gets creative. You wanna hear about the corners of hell I’ve seen Sam?
SAM moves his head, the last thing he wants to be given is a tour through the depths of hell his brother might be in right now.
SAM
No, I don’t.
RUBY
And the things I had to do to convince her I was sorry, that I could be trusted.
SAM
Well, this will definitely get you a fat Christmas bonus.
RUBY
Very funny. I’m a fugitive for you, Sam. I took all of this risk to get back to you, so yeah, I deserve a damn ‘thank you’.
SAM looks on the verge of tears, his eyes shining, he doesn’t even want to live. Without his brother and father, he has no one.
SAM
Who asked you to save me?
RUBY
I’m just tryin’ to help.
SAM
Can you help me save Dean?
RUBY
No, nothing I know of is powerful enough to do that.
SAM cranks the wheel and pulls off the side of the road stopping.
SAM
Then I have no use for you.
RUBY
What?
SAM
Get out.
RUBY
Sam-
SAM
Who’s body are you riding Ruby?
RUBY looks taken aback by the question.
RUBY
What do you care? You’ve never asked me that before.
SAM
I’m asking now.
RUBY
Some secretary.
SAM
Let her go.
RUBY
Sam-
SAM
Or I send you right back to hell.
RUBY looks at SAM, sees he is serious and takes a breath.
INT. HOSPITAL – NIGHT
The camera pans up a bed, the name on it reads:
DOE, JANE
45-098-R3
There is a NURSE there, standig next to the bed, and a DOCTOR holding a chart on the other side, with the JANE DOE, lying in the bed with a tube in her mouth. The camera comes up and we see that JANE DOE is the body that RUBY is in now, present time.
DOCTOR
Alright, pull it.
The NURSE takes out the breathing tube and after a couple seconds the machines beep and JANE DOE flatlines. Suddenly the girl sits up, the thumb tab keeping track of her heart rate on the bed next to her, so the machines are still flatlining. She takes a few big gulps of air, so she is still breathing, alive. She looks around, the DOCTOR’e eyes wide with surprise.
RUBY
Who do I have to kill to get some french fries around here?
INT. HOUSE – DAY
SAM is sitting at a table in a rundown house, obviously squatting. He is surrounded by empty food containers and a shotgun is next to him on the table and there are empty beer and hard liquor bottles in front of him. He concentrates on cleaning a hand gun. Ther is a knock on the door, and SAM gets up, grabbing the rifle, and cocking it as he makes his way to the door. As he opens the door he holds the gun against it, ready to shoot through it if he has to. RUBY is standing there with a piece of paper in her hands.
RUBY
Proof.
She turns the paper toward him, and he looks at her questioningly.
RUBY
This body is 100% socially conscious. I recycle.
RUBY hands SAM the paper and steps into the house and looks up at SAM.
RUBY
Al Gore would be proud.
SAM pushes the door closed with the rifle and reads the paper.
SAM
You grabbed a coma patient?
RUBY makes her way into the house to where the table he was working at is, SAM following.
RUBY
You didn’t want me to take a body with someone in it, and I made sure that the spirit was gone. Apartment was empty, you happy?
SAM still looks like shit, same as the last time she saw him. He has red eyes and he is even a little drunk, in the middle of the day.
SAM
Why are you here?
RUBY
Look, I can’t bring Dean back, but I can get you something else that you want.
SAM
Huh, and uh, what’s that?
RUBY
Lilith.
SAM
You want me to use my psychic whatever.
RUBY
Look, I know that it spooks you.
SAM
Skip the speech, I’m ready, let’s go.
RUBY
Slow down there cowboy.
SAM seems desperate again.
SAM
Just tell me what I have to do.
RUBY sits down at the table and grabs one of the liquor bottles with a little left in it and takes a swig.
RUBY
Look, Lilith is one scary bitch. When I was in the pit, there was talk. She’s cooking up something big, Apocalyptic big.
SAM
So, let’s kill her.
RUBY
You wanna go in there and half ass it like before?
SAM looks at her, narrowing his eyes, and realizing she has a point, but RUBY continues, insistent.
RUBY
We have time to get it right, let’s get it right.
SAM
Okay, what do you want from me?
SAM takes a drink from a liquor bottle.
RUBY
Well, a little patience, and sobriety. Promise me that, and I will teach you everything I know.
INT. MOTEL ROOM – NIGHT
In present time, SAM looks up from telling his story, and DEAN is sitting by the front window of the room, looking at him with a glass of liquor in his hand.
DEAN
So, what’d she teach you?
SAM
Well, the first thing I learned
Sam chuckles to himself.
SAM
I’m a crappy student.
INT. HOUSE – NIGHT
Back to about six months ago when he was starting lessons with RUBY. SAM is standing in front of a DEMON tied to a chair in the middle of a Devil’s Trap. RUBY is standing to the side, and nods at SAM. SAM is sweaty and puts out his hand and concentrates on exorcising the DEMON. Even though we have seen him struggle before, it hasn’t ever been like this. He is sweaty and barely gets a little black smoke to come out of the man the demon is possessing, and it sucks back in. SAM tries again, but the same thing happens, a little black smoke comes out of his mouth before SAM’s nose starts to bleed and he has to stop, but the demon manages to remain in the body. RUBY circles to the front of the Devil’s Trap, and is glaring at the demon when he laughs at SAM. RUBY steps in and shoves her knife into the DEMON’s throat so hard it goes through and comes out the back of his neck.
RUBY
Not funny.
INT. HOUSE – NIGHT
SAM comes into the room we just saw and crosses to the table tossing down the shovel he just buried the man with, RUBY is right behind him, and we see the edge of the Devil’s Trap is scraped away as she walks through it without getting trapped. SAM takes an aspirin bottle out of his duffel bag, and takes some out.
RUBY
Just give it time Sam, it’ll get better. SAM whips around, skeptical and laughs at her.
SAM
What? I need more practice?
SAM swallows the aspirin down with a gulp from a liquor bottle.
RUBY
I’m not talking about pulling demons.
SAM sits down on the edge of the table wincing from the liquor burn.
RUBY
I know losing Dean is the-
SAM
Hey! I don’t wanna talk about it.
RUBY stands there and SAM takes a deep breath.
SAM
You know what? Where do you get off slapping me with that greeting card, time-heals crap, what the hell do you know?
RUBY
I used to be human.
RUBY takes a step toward SAM and her eyes well up with tears.
RUBY
And I still remember what it feels like to lose someone.
SAM just glares at her, trying to be clod, but his armor is cracked and you can tell he is upset. RUBY reaches out a hand to the side of his face.
RUBY
I’m sorry.
SAM shoves her hand away.
SAM
Uh,uh-uh, don’t.
RUBY looks down at SAM, who is barely holding it together.
SAM
I can’t.
RUBY
Sam, you’re not alone.
RUBY closes the space between them now and kisses him. SAM almost immediately pushes her off and gets up walking past her and sitting over on the couch, away from her.
SAM
Uhh, uh-uh, what are you doing?
RUBY
Sam it’s okay!
SAM
No, that is anything but okay!
RUBY
What’s wrong?
SAM
What’s wrong?! Where do I start?
SAM looks at her out of the corner of his eyes, staring at the body she is in. RUBY catches him and walks over to him.
RUBY
Is it because of the body?
RUBY takes off her jacket and kneels in front of SAM between his legs with her hands on his knees, as SAM averts his eyes from her.
RUBY
Because I told you, it’s all me inside of here.
RUBY takes his hand and pulls it down and lifts her shirt up with it, forcing SAM’s hand to feel the body underneath her shirt.
RUBY
There’s no one else in here, and it’s nice inside this body, Sam.
SAM lifts his head and takes a deep breath, and leans his forehead against hers and opens his eyes, now looking at her.
RUBY
Soft, and warm.
RUBY continues to push SAM’s hand onto the bare skin of her side.
SAM
What are you doing?
RUBY
Isn’t it cause you’re really scared to go there with a demon? Because it’s wrong and it’s bad and we shouldn’t?
That breaks him and he grabs her face with both his hands and pulls her into a kiss. He lifts her up into his lap so she is straddling him, and they kiss and undress eachother, going at it rather hard and angry. The camera breaks from them, and focuses on the floor and we see SAM’s pants fall to the floor.
INT. MOTEL ROOM – NIGHT
The camera shows DEAN’s face just shocked and staring at SAM.
DEAN
Sam?
SAM
Yeah?
DEAN
Too much information.
SAM
Hey, I told you I was coming clean
DEAN
Yeah, but now I feel dirty. Okay, well, uh- brain-stabbing imagery aside, so far all you’ve told me about is a manipulative bitch who uh- screwed you, played mind games with you and did everything in the book to get you to go bad.
SAM
Yeah, well there’s more to the story.
DEAN
Just…skip the nudity, please.
SAM
Pretty soon after…that, um…I put together some signs, omens.
DEAN
Saying what?
SAM
Lilith was in town.
DEAN’s eyes widen, and he looks at SAM. SAM nods at him.
SAM
And I wanted to strike her first.
INT. HOUSE – DAY
SUBTITLE: FIVE MONTHS EARLIER
SAM shoves his arm into his jacket and walks toward RUBY, standing at the table.
RUBY
You’re not ready yet.
SAM
It’s now or never.
RUBY
No, we gotta wait, until you get it right. You haven’t been too successful.
SAM
Alright, I’ll use this.
SAM reaches in and takes out RUBY’s knife. RUBY grabs his hand.
RUBY
Stop! You can’t just fly in there reckless Sam, we need you to take the bitch out.
SAM
Oh, I’ll take her out alright.
RUBY
You get one shot.
RUBY drops his hand.
RUBY
And you’re it, you’re the only one that can do it Sam, so if she kills you first...
RUBY sees something in SAM’s expression.
SAM
What?
RUBY
You don’t want to survive this.
SAM
Come on-
RUBY
It’s a kamikaze attack, you want to die fighting Lilith.
SAM
That’s stupid.
SAM walks toward the front door and RUBY follows him.
RUBY
No, it’s the truth because if you kill her and you survive this, then you have to go on without your brother.
RUBY pins herself againtthe door, blocking SAM’s exit.
RUBY
This isn’t what Dean would have wanted, this isn’t what he died for.
SAM
Get out of my way.
RUBY
No, Sam, this is suicide.
RUBY goes to puch his backwards, but SAM is too quick and slams her into the wall beside the door putting her own knife against her throat. He glares at her, clenches his jaw and turns the knob on the door and leaves. RUBY stands there frozen.
EXT. STREET – DAY
SAM walks up to a house and sees a LITTLE GIRL sitting at a table through the front window, and heads for the house.
INT. HOUSE – DAY
The door opens and SAM comes into the house, with the knife drawn. He opens the closet door and finds nothing, walks toward the LITTLE GIRL sitting at the dining room table with the knife out, and she turns around, looking scared.
LITTLE GIRL
Please, I wanna go home.
SAM gets attacked from behind, and his attacker (DEMON #2) knocks the knife out of his hand and slams him agains the door frame, another attacker (DEMON #1) pins SAM’s chest.
DEMON #1
Lilith sends her regrets, she couldn’t make it.
SAM is being choked by DEMON #1 and RUBY walks up grabbing the knife and slitting DEMON # 2’s throat. RUBY pulls DEMON #1 off SAM and shoves him across the room. SAM looks at her surprised she came after him when he all but threatened her life. RUBY is advancing on DEMON #1 with the knife out and she turns back to SAM.
RUBY
Take the girl and run!
SAM scoops up the girl and runs out the back. RUBY punches DEMON #1 a few times, and they fight back and forth. DEMON #1 grabs and bends RUBY’s wrist back when she attacks and makes her drop the knife and then pins her against the wall, dangling her above ground.
DEMON #1
Ruby, you’re in so much trouble. When we get you down in the basement, the things we’re gonna do to you.
DEMON #1 starts to choke and we see SAM struggling and focusing behind him. Smoke pours out DEMON #1’s mouth and he falls to the floor as SAM exorcizes him. SAM’s nose still bleeds and his head pounds but he manages to do it this time. RUBY looks worriedly at him, he had to work really hard to do it and he looks exhausted, and is breathing hard.
RUBY
Sam-
SAM
I’m okay…thanks.
INT. MOTEL – NIGHT
In present time, SAM is still telling his story.
SAM
Ruby came back for me. Whatever you have to say, she saved me.More than that she got through to me, what she said to me, it’s what you would’ve said.
DEAN looks up at that, not sure how to take it, looking at SAM.
SAM
If it wasn’t for her I wouldn’t be here.
DEAN mulls that over while SAM waits for him to respond. Before DEAN can say anything, there is a knock on the door.
MAID
Housekeeping.
DEAN
Not now.
MAID
Sir, I’ve got clean towels.
DEAN gets up and opens the door to a black woman in a maid uniform.
DEAN
Couldn’t you just leave ‘em at the door?
She hands DEAN the towels and shoves past him into the room, shutting the curtains over the woindow and going straight to SAM, pulling out a piece of paper before she gets all the way over to him.
MAID
I’m at this address.
SAM
I’m sorry, what?
MAID
Go now, go through the bathroom window, don’t stop, don’t take your car, don’t pass go. There are demons in the hallway and in the parking lot.
SAM finally realizes who is talking to him.
SAM
Ruby?!
RUBY
Okay yes, so I’m possessing this maid for a hot minute, sue me.
SAM
What about-?
RUBY
Coma girl? Slowly rotting on the floor back at the cabin with Anna, so I’ve gotta hurry back. See you when you get there. Go!
RUBY in the MAID’s body walks out quickly past DEAN who watches her go. DEAN then turns to SAM with a look of shocked confusion on his face, still holding the towels.
EXT. CABIN – NIGHT
SAM and DEAN walk up to the cabin that has a light on inside and RUBY opens the door for them.
INT. CABIN – NIGHT
A rustic country cabin, ANNA is sitting on the couch and SAM and DEAN walk in, over to her.
RUBY
Glad you could make it.
SAM
Yeah, thanks. Anna, are you okay?
ANNA
Yeah, I think so, Ruby’s not like other demon’s she saved my life.
SAM nods at her, and DEAN takes that as his cue.
DEAN
Yeah, I hear she does that.
DEAN looks at RUBY and she looks at him, not sure what he wants.
DEAN
I guess I uh…
DEAN clears his throat and RUBY crosses her arms over her chest.
DEAN
You know?
RUBY
What?
DEAN
I guess I owe you for…Sam.
RUBY just raises an eyebrow at him.
DEAN
And I just wanted…you know?
RUBY
Don’t strain yourself.
DEAN
Okay then, is the moment over?
RUBY rolls her eyes.
DEAN
Good, cause that was awkward.
ANNA
Hey, Sam, you think it’d be safe to make a quick call? Just to tell my parents I’m okay, they must be completely freaked.
SAM, RUBY and DEAN all look at each other, none of them wanting to spill the bad news to ANNA about her parents. ANNA sees that something is up though.
SAM
Uh…
ANNA
What?
SAM sighs a big breath and goes to sit down next to her on the couch.
SAM
Anna, um…your parents.
ANNA
What about them?
SAM
Look, I’m sorry.
ANNA gets what he means.
ANNA
No, they’re not-?
SAM
Anna, I’m sorry.
ANNA starts crying and rocking forward and backward on the couch with her head in her hands. DEAN and RUBY both look at her, and they look sad for her.
ANNA
Why is this happening to me?
SAM
I don’t know.
SAM rests his hand on her back to comfort her and she continues to sob. Suddenly she comes up, looking scared and breathes hard.
ANNA
They’re coming.
The lights flicker and they all look around, DEAN is the first to move, he points to a room off the one they are in, motioning for SAM to take ANNA there.
DEAN
Back room!
DEAN grabs guns for both him and SAM out of the duffel bag while SAM locks ANNA in the back room. RUBY locks the door and goes searching through the duffel bag as DEAN hands SAM a shotgun, and DEAN faces one door and SAM aims his shotgun at the other. RUBY looks up at them.
RUBY
Where’s ths knife?
DEAN and SAM exchange a look and DEAN tries to explain.
DEAN
Uh, about that-
RUBY
You’re kidding!
DEAN
Hey, don’t look at me.
DEAN eyes SAM, blaming it on him.
SAM
Thanks a lot.
DEAN smiles at him, feigning innocence.
RUBY
Great, just peachy impeccable timing guys, really.
They hear noises and rattling starts at the door that SAM is aimed at, so DEAN joins him facing it and RUBY stands next to DEAN. The door slams open, breaking the lock, and wind gusts in. We hear flapping and CASTIEL and URIEL enter the cabin through the door. RUBY’s eyes automatically go black and she looks scared, and URIEL glares.
DEAN
Please tell me you’re here to help. We’ve been having demon issues all day.
URIEL
I can see that.
RUBY’s eyes go back to normal, and URIEL stares at her still.
URIEL
You want to explain why you have that stain in the room?
DEAN looks at her and then looks at SAM trying to come up with an excuse, but CASTIEL speaks first.
CASTIEL
We’re here for Anna.
DEAN
Here for her, like…here for her?
URIEL
Stop talking, give her to us.
SAM
Are you gonna help her?
CASTIEL
No, she has to die.
