[The episode begins with a recap of “Salvation”.]
[FADE IN: Warehouse. MEG answers JOHN’s cell phone. The scene alternates between the warehouse and the motel room, where DEAN and SAM are.]
MEG: You boys really screwed up this time.
DEAN: [angry] Where is he?
MEG: You’re never gonna see your father again. [Shocked, DEAN hangs up.]
DEAN: They’ve got Dad.
SAM: Meg? [DEAN nods sadly.] What’d she say?
DEAN: I just told you, Sammy. [He wipes his eyes, trying to calm down.] Okay….okay. [He grabs the Colt from where it is sitting on an end table and puts it in his back pocket. He moves to the bed and grabs his duffel bag.]
SAM: What are you doing, Dean?
DEAN: We gotta go.
SAM: Why?
DEAN: Because the demon knows we’re in Salvation, all right? It knows we’ve got the Colt, it’s got Dad, it’s probably comin’ for us next. [He pulls on his coat.]
SAM: Good. We’ve still got three bullets left. Let it come.
DEAN: Listen, tough guy, we’re not ready! We don’t know how many of ‘em are out there. Now, we’re no good to anybody dead. We’re leaving. Now. [He walks away.]
[CUT TO: INT. – Car. DEAN and SAM are speeding down the road.]
SAM: I’m tellin’ you, Dean, we could’ve taken him.
DEAN: [ignoring him] What we need is a plan. Now, they’re probably keeping Dad alive, we’ve just got to figure out where. They’ll want to trade him for the gun. [He notices SAM shaking his head.] What?
SAM: Dean, if that were true, why didn’t Meg mention a trade? [DEAN says nothing.] Dad….he might be—
DEAN: Don’t!
SAM: Look, I don’t want to believe it any more than you. But if he is, all the more reason to kill this damn thing. We still have the Colt. We can still finish the job.
DEAN: Screw the job, Sam!
SAM: Dean, I’m just tryin’ to do what he would want. He would want us to keep going.
DEAN: Would you quit talkin’ about him like he’s dead already? Listen to me! Everything stops until we get him back, you understand me? Everything!
SAM: [after a pause] So, how do we find him?
DEAN: Maybe we go to Lincoln. Start at the warehouse where he was taken.
SAM: Come on, Dean, you really think these demons are gonna leave a trail?
DEAN: [defeated] You’re right. We need help. [He speeds down the road.]
[CUT TO: EXT. – Singer’s Autos. Morning. A rundown, dirty house is surrounded by car parts that have been scattered around the yard. On the hood of a blue pickup truck sits a lazy dog, Rumsfeld. Inside the house, DEAN and SAM are talking with BOBBY SINGER, a family friend. BOBBY hands DEAN a small bottle.]
BOBBY: Here ya go.
DEAN: What is this? Holy water?
BOBBY: That one is. [He holds up another bottle.] This is whiskey. [He takes a swig and hands the bottle to DEAN, who also drinks from it. SAM is sitting at a desk, looking through a large book.]
DEAN: Bobby, thanks. Thanks for everything. To tell you the truth, I wasn’t sure if we should come.
BOBBY: Nonsense. Your daddy needs help.
DEAN: Yeah, but last time we saw you, you did threaten to blast him full of buckshot. You cocked the shotgun and everything.
BOBBY: Yeah, well, what can I say? John just has that effect on people.
DEAN: Yeah, I guess he does.
BOBBY: None of that matters now. All that matters is that you get him back.
SAM: Bobby, this book—I’ve never seen anything like it. [BOBBY and DEAN come over to look at it.]
BOBBY: The Key of Solomon? It’s the real deal, all right.
SAM: [pointing to something in the book] And these protective circles—they really work?
BOBBY: Hell, yeah. You get a demon in one, they’re trapped—powerless. It’s like a satanic roach motel. [SAM laughs.]
DEAN: The man knows his stuff.
BOBBY: I’ll tell you somethin’ else, too—this is some serious crap you boys stepped in.
SAM: Yeah? How’s that?
BOBBY: Normal year, I hear, say, three demonic possessions, maybe four, tops.
DEAN: Yeah?
BOBBY: This year, I’ve heard of twenty-seven so far. You get what I’m sayin’? More and more demons are walkin’ among us—a lot more.
SAM: Do you know why?
BOBBY: No, but I know it’s somethin’ big. A storm’s comin’. And you boys, your daddy—you are smack in the middle of it. [DEAN and SAM exchange a look. From outside, they can hear a dog barking.] Rumsfeld. What is it? [He moves to the window and sees that Rumsfeld is no longer sitting on the hood of the pickup truck.] Something’s wrong. [Suddenly, MEG kicks down the door of the house and walks in. DEAN takes out the bottle of holy water from his pocket.]
MEG: No more crap, okay? [As he unscrews the bottle, DEAN begins walking towards her. She hits him and he is flung against the wall. He collapses to the ground. As MEG walks towards SAM and BOBBY, they begin backing away.] I want the Colt, Sam—the real Colt. Right now.
SAM: We don’t have it on us. We buried it.
MEG: Didn’t I say, “No more crap”? I swear, after everything I heard about you Winchesters, I’ve got to tell you, I’m a little underwhelmed. First, Johnny tries to pawn off a fake gun, and then he leaves the real gun with you two chuckleheads. Lackluster, men. I mean, did you really think I wouldn’t find you? [DEAN comes behind her.]
DEAN: Actually, we were counting on it. [MEG turns around to face him. He looks up at the ceiling. She looks up also and sees one of the protective circles from the book.] Gotcha. [The screen goes black.]
[FADE IN: INT. – BOBBY’S HOUSE. MEG is now tied in a chair.]
MEG: You know, if you wanted to tie me up, all you had to do was ask. [SAM and DEAN ignore her. BOBBY enters the room and comes over to talk to the boys.]
BOBBY: I salted the doors and windows. If there are any demons out there, they ain’t gettin’ in. [They nod. DEAN gets up and goes to talk to MEG.]
DEAN: Where’s our father, Meg?
MEG: You didn’t ask very nice.
DEAN: Where’s our father, bitch?
MEG: Jeez, you kiss your mother with that mouth? Oh, I forgot. You don’t.
DEAN: [leaning in very close, inches away from her face] Hey, you think this is a friggin’ game?! Where is he?! What did you do to him?
MEG: He died screaming. I killed him myself. [She gives him a wicked smile. DEAN is seething with anger. Suddenly, he backhands her. SAM and BOBBY are shocked.] That’s kind of a turn on—you hitting a girl.
DEAN: You’re no girl.
BOBBY: Dean. [DEAN walks over to talk to him and SAM.]
SAM: You okay?
DEAN: She’s lying, he’s not dead.
BOBBY: Dean, you’ve got to be careful with her. Don’t hurt her.
DEAN: Why?
BOBBY: Because she really is a girl, that’s why.
SAM: What are you talkin’ about?
BOBBY: She’s possessed. That’s a human possessed by a demon, can’t you tell? [They look at MEG, who is visibly shaking in her chair.]
DEAN: You’re tryin’ to tell me there’s an innocent girl trapped somewhere in there? [BOBBY nods. DEAN looks at MEG once more.] That’s actually good news.
[CUT TO: Minutes Later. DEAN and SAM are standing by MEG. SAM is holding their father’s journal open.]
MEG: Are you gonna read me a story?
DEAN: Somethin’ like that. Hit it, Sam. [SAM begins speaking in Latin.]
MEG: [to DEAN] An exorcism? Are you serious?
DEAN: Oh, we’re goin’ for it, baby—head-spinning, projectile vomiting, the whole nine yards. [As SAM continues reading, MEG suddenly grimaces and moans in pain. SAM stops.]
MEG: I’m gonna kill you. I’m gonna rip the bones from your body.
DEAN: No, you’re gonna burn in hell—unless you tell us where our dad is. [MEG says nothing.] Well, at least you’ll get a nice tan. [He gives SAM a nod.]
SAM: [reading] “Exorcizamus te, omnis immundus spiritus , omnis satanica potestas, omnis incursio infernalis adversarii, omnis legio, omnis congregatio, et secta diabolica.” [MEG, trembling, suddenly screams in pain.]
MEG: [through clenched teeth] He begged for his life with tears in his eyes. He begged to see his sons one last time. That’s when I slit his throat. [SAM looks at DEAN nervously. DEAN leans in very close to MEG, so that they are inches away from each other.]
DEAN: For your sake, I hope you’re lying. ‘Cause if it’s true, I swear to God, I will march into hell myself, and I will slaughter each and every one of you evil sons of bitches, so help me God. [He backs away from her.]
SAM: “Perditionis venenum propinare. Vade, satana, inventor et magister omnis fallaciae, hostis humanae salutis.” [Suddenly, the pages of a nearby open book begin to turn on their own, as if a wind is blowing. SAM hesitates at first, but then continues.] “Humiliare sub potenti manu dei, contremisce et effuge, invocato a nobis sancto et terribili nomine, quem inferi tremunt.” [MEG continues to suffer. She screams again, shaking uncontrollably.]
DEAN: Where is he?
MEG: You just won’t take “dead” for an answer, will you?
DEAN: Where is he?!
MEG: Dead!
DEAN: No, he’s not! He’s not dead, he can’t be! [SAM looks at DEAN, confused.] What are you lookin’ at? Keep reading.
SAM: “Ab insidiis diaboli, libera nos, domine. Ut ecclesiam tuam secura tibi facias libertate servire, te rogamus, audi nos.” [Suddenly, MEG screams loudly. Her chair begins moving around the room as SAM continues to read. The lights in the room flicker as MEG screams.] “Te rogamus audi—” [Her chair stops.]
MEG: He will be! [SAM stops.]
DEAN: Wait! What?!
MEG: He’s not dead. But he will be after what we do to him.
DEAN: How do we know you’re telling the truth?
MEG: You don’t.
DEAN: Sam!
MEG: A building! Okay? A building in Jefferson City.
DEAN: Missouri? Where, where? An address!
MEG: I don’t know!
SAM: And the demon, the one we’re looking for, where is it?
MEG: I don’t know, I swear! That’s everything. That’s all I know. [She is exhausted. Tears streak her face, and she is breathing heavily.]
DEAN: [to SAM] Finish it.
MEG: What? I told you the truth!
DEAN: I don’t care.
MEG: You son of a bitch. You promised.
DEAN: I lied! Sam? [SAM says nothing.] Sam! [He walks over to SAM.] Read.
SAM: We can still use her—find out where the demon is.
DEAN: She doesn’t know.
SAM: She lied!
DEAN: Sam, there’s an innocent girl trapped somewhere in there. We’ve got to help her.
BOBBY: [walking over to them] You’re gonna kill her.
DEAN: What?
BOBBY: You said she fell from a building. That girl’s body is broken. The only thing keeping her alive is that demon inside. You exorcise it, the girl is gonna die.
DEAN: Listen to me, both of you, we are not gonna leave her like that.
BOBBY: She is a human being.
DEAN: And we’re gonna put her out of her misery. [BOBBY says nothing, defeated. DEAN turns to SAM.] Sam, finish it. [SAM looks over at MEG, who is still struggling.] Finish it. [SAM reluctantly begins reading again.]
SAM: “Dominicos sanctae ecclesiae. Terogamus audi nos.” [As he continues to read, MEG’s body twitches. Her eyes turn coal-black. A moment later, she tilts her head up to the ceiling and lets out a long, loud scream. An enormous cloud of black smoke erupts from her mouth. The three men watch in awe. When the demon has left her body, MEG’s head falls forward. She is motionless and appears to be dead. A string of blood and saliva drips from her mouth. Suddenly, she begins to lift her head up slowly. Blood is running from her nose and mouth.]
DEAN: She’s still alive. [to BOBBY] Call 911. Get some water and blankets. [BOBBY leaves the room. SAM and DEAN go over to MEG’s chair and begin untying the ropes around her wrists.]
MEG: [weakly] Thank you.
SAM: Shh, shh....just take it easy, all right? Shh.
DEAN: Come on. Let’s get her down. [They pick MEG up and carry her over to the floor. She groans in pain.]
SAM: Sorry, sorry. I’ve got you. I’ve got you. It’s okay. It’s okay. [They lay her down.]
MEG: [quietly] A year.
SAM: What?
MEG: It’s been a year.
SAM: Shh, shh, just take it easy.
MEG: I’ve been awake….for some of it. I couldn’t move my own body. The things I did—it’s a nightmare.
DEAN: Was it telling us the truth about our dad?
SAM: Dean.
DEAN: [to SAM] We need to know.
MEG: Yes. But it wants you to know….that they want you to come for him.
DEAN: If Dad’s still alive, none of that matters. [BOBBY returns with blankets and a glass of water. DEAN takes the water and brings it to MEG’s mouth. She tries to drink but spits some of it out.]
SAM: Where’s the demon we’re looking for?
MEG: Not there….other ones—awful ones.
DEAN: Where are they keeping our dad?
MEG: By the r-river. [She pauses.] Sunrise.
DEAN: Sunrise? What does that mean? [She goes silent.] What does that mean? [MEG lays there, motionless. She is dead. The three men exchange sad glances. DEAN looks at MEG’s lifeless body. The screen goes black.]
[FADE IN: BOBBY’S HOUSE. DEAN and SAM are about to leave.]
BOBBY: You better hurry up and beat it before the paramedics get here.
DEAN: What are you gonna tell them?
BOBBY: You think you guys invented lyin’ to the cops? I’ll figure somethin’ out. [He hands SAM the book they were looking at earlier.] Here. Take this. You might need it.
SAM: Thanks.
DEAN: Thanks….for everything. Be careful, all right?
BOBBY: You just go find your dad. And when you do, bring him around, would ya? I won’t even try to shoot him this time. [They laugh half-heartedly. The boys give him a knowing nod and leave the house.]
[CUT TO: Jefferson City, Missouri. DEAN and SAM have parked the car by the river. SAM is looking through the book, while DEAN is loading a gun.]
SAM: You’ve been quiet.
DEAN: Just gettin’ ready.
SAM: He’s gonna be fine, Dean. [DEAN doesn’t reply. SAM notices a special diagram in the book. He wipes away some dust on the trunk of the car and begins drawing the picture.]
DEAN: Dude, what are you drawin’ on my car?
SAM: It’s called a devil’s trap. Demons can’t get through it or inside it.
DEAN: So?
SAM: It basically turns the trunk into a lockbox. [He begins drawing another devil’s trap on the other side of the trunk.]
DEAN: So?
SAM: So, we have a place to hide the Colt while we go get Dad.
DEAN: What are you talkin’ about? We’re bringin’ the Colt with us.
SAM: We can’t, Dean. We’ve only got three bullets left. We can’t just use 'em on any demon. We’ve got to use 'em on the demon.
DEAN: No, we have to save Dad, Sam, okay? We’re gonna need all the help we can get.
SAM: Dean, you know how pissed Dad would be if we used all the bullets? Dean, he wouldn’t want us to bring the gun.
DEAN: I don’t care, Sam! I don’t care what Dad wants, okay? And since when do you care what Dad wants?
SAM: We want to kill this demon. You used to want that, too! Hell, you’re the one who came and got me at school! You’re the one who dragged me back into this, Dean! I’m just tryin’ to finish it!
DEAN: [after a pause] Well, you and Dad are a lot more alike than I thought, you know that? You both can’t wait to sacrifice yourself for this thing. But you know what? I’m gonna be the one to bury you. You’re selfish, you know that? You don’t care about anything but revenge.
SAM: That’s not true, Dean. I want Dad back. But they are expecting us to bring this gun. They get the gun, they will kill us all. That Colt is our only leverage, and you know it, Dean. We cannot bring that gun. We can’t.
DEAN: Fine.
SAM: I’m serious, Dean.
DEAN: I said “fine”, Sam. [He takes the Colt out of his coat pocket, shows it to SAM, and places it in the trunk.]
[CUT TO: River. DEAN and SAM are walking in silence. They reach a few trees and hide behind them before going any further.]
DEAN: Hey, hey. I think I know what Meg meant by “Sunrise”. [Across the street, there is an apartment complex called Sunrise Apartments.] Son of a bitch. That’s pretty smart. I mean, if these demons can possess people, they can possess almost anybody inside.
SAM: Yeah. And make anybody attack us.
DEAN: And so we can’t kill ‘em—a building full of human shields.
SAM: They probably know exactly what we look like, too. And they can look like anybody.
DEAN: This sucks out loud.
SAM: Yeah, tell me about it. All right, so, how the hell are we gonna get in? [They think for a minute.]
DEAN: Pull the fire alarm. Get out all the civilians.
SAM: Okay. But then the city responds in, what, seven minutes?
DEAN: Seven minutes, exactly.
[CUT TO: INT. – Sunrise Apartments. SAM enters the building and looks around. Once he makes sure no one is there, he pulls the fire alarm. In one of the apartments, a man and a woman are sitting at their kitchen table. They look at each other knowingly. The man goes into the bedroom, where JOHN is tied down to the bed, seemingly unconscious.]
[CUT TO: EXT. – Sunrise Apartments. The civilians are evacuating the building. DEAN walks up to a fireman.]
DEAN: Hey, what’s happening? Is there a fire?
FIREMAN: We’re figuring that out right now, sir. Just stay back.
DEAN: Well, I got a Yorkie upstairs, and he pees when he’s nervous. [While DEAN is talking to the fireman, SAM is able to sneak around to one of the fire trucks. He begins picking the lock on the door of the truck.]
[CUT TO: INT. – Sunrise Apartments. DEAN and SAM are walking through the hallway, dressed in firefighter uniforms. They are going to each apartment door with the EMF detector.]
DEAN: I always wanted to be a fireman when I grew up.
SAM: You never told me that. [Outside one of the apartment doors, the EMF detector starts beeping frantically. SAM and DEAN exchange a look. Inside the apartment, the possessed man and woman are at the table. They hear a knock on the door. Their eyes are coal-black, just like MEG. They walk to the door and look through the peephole.]
DEAN: This is the fire department, we need you to evacuate! [The man nods, and the woman unlocks the door. DEAN and SAM come bursting into the apartment and spray the couple with fire extinguishers to distract them. Then, they shove the man and woman into a closet. SAM holds himself against the door while DEAN pours a ring of salt on the floor, around the door. Once they have locked the demons inside, they take off their uniforms and head into the bedroom. DEAN rushes over to JOHN.] Dad? [He checks to see if JOHN is alive.] He’s still breathing. [DEAN shakes him.] Dad, wake up. Dad! [He doesn’t wake up. DEAN takes out a knife and is about to cut JOHN’s ropes.]
SAM: Wait, wait.
DEAN: What?
SAM: He could be possessed for all we know.
DEAN: What are you, nuts?
SAM: Dean, we’ve got to be sure. [He takes out the bottle of holy water and pours some of it on JOHN. He wakes up.]
JOHN: Sam? Why are you splashin’ water on me? [SAM smiles, relieved.]
DEAN: Dad, you okay?
JOHN: They’ve been druggin’ me. [He sighs.] Where’s the Colt?
SAM: Don’t worry, Dad. It’s safe.
JOHN: Good, boys. Good, boys.
[CUT TO: EXT. – Sunrise Apartments. A group of people is standing outside the building. Suddenly, one of the men becomes possessed. His eyes immediately turn black. He begins walking like a zombie toward the building, but another fireman stops him.]
FIREMAN: Hey, buddy, you can’t go in. [He grabs the man by the shoulders. The fireman also becomes possessed. He follows the man to the building, also with black eyes.]
[CUT TO: INT. – Apartment. DEAN and SAM are walking to the door of the apartment, with JOHN over their shoulders. Then, the two possessed men come bursting through the door.]
SAM: Go! Go!
DEAN: Back, back! [They rush back into the bedroom and lock the door behind them. Suddenly, an axe comes through the door. The screen goes black.]
[FADE IN: Apartment Bedroom. The possessed men are still chopping through the door. While SAM puts salt by the door, DEAN and JOHN are leaving through the window.]
DEAN: Sam! Let's go! [SAM follows them and covers the windowsill in salt before he climbs down the fire escape. When all three Winchesters get down to the sidewalk, they begin walking to the car. Suddenly, TOM comes and knocks SAM down to the ground. He begins punching SAM mercilessly. DEAN rushes over to them and kicks TOM, but it doesn’t stop him. TOM sends DEAN sailing into the windshield of a nearby parked car. He resumes punching SAM again and again. A moment later, TOM is shot in the head. He falls to the ground, dead. DEAN is holding the Colt in his hand. He runs over to SAM and helps him to his feet.] Sam….Sam. [For a moment, he looks at TOM’s body sadly. Then, he and SAM rush over to JOHN and help him to the car.] Come on. Come on, we’ve got to get out of here.
[CUT TO: Rundown Building. Night. SAM is putting salt on the windowsill, while DEAN sits on the bed. SAM’s right eye is bruised and swollen badly.]
SAM: How is he?
DEAN: He just needed a little rest, that’s all. How are you?
SAM: I’ll survive. Hey, you don’t think we were followed here, do you?
DEAN: I don’t know. I don’t think so. We couldn’t have found a more out-of-the-way place to hole up.
SAM: Yeah. Hey, uh….Dean, you, um….you saved my life back there.
DEAN: So, I guess you’re glad I brought the gun, huh?
SAM: Man, I’m tryin’ to thank you here.
DEAN: [after a pause] You’re welcome. [SAM walks to the other side of the room.] Hey, Sam?
SAM: Yeah?
DEAN: You know that guy I shot? There was a person in there.
SAM: You didn’t have a choice, Dean.
DEAN: Yeah, I know. That’s not what bothers me.
SAM: Then what does?
DEAN: Killin’ that guy, killin’ Meg—I didn’t hesitate. I didn’t even flinch. For you or Dad, the things I’m willin’ to do or kill, it just….it scares me sometimes. [SAM watches him sadly. JOHN enters the room.]
JOHN: It shouldn’t. You did good.
DEAN: You’re not mad?
JOHN: For what?
DEAN: Usin’ a bullet.
JOHN: Mad? I’m proud of you. You know, Sam and I, we can get pretty obsessed. But you—you watch out for this family. You always have.
DEAN: [slightly confused] Thanks. [Suddenly, the lights in the room begin to flicker. A strong wind begins blowing outside. They all move to the window.]
JOHN: It found us. It’s here.
SAM: The demon?
JOHN: Sam, lines of salt in front of every window, every door.
SAM: Already did it.
JOHN: Well, check it, okay? [SAM nods and leaves the room.] Dean, you got the gun?
DEAN: Yeah.
JOHN: Give it to me.
DEAN: Dad, Sam tried to shoot the demon in Salvation. It vanished.
JOHN: This is me. I won’t miss. Now, the gun. Hurry. [DEAN holds the gun but doesn’t give it to his father.] Son, please. [DEAN takes a few steps back from JOHN.] Give me the gun. What are you doing, Dean?
DEAN: You’d be furious.
JOHN: What?
DEAN: That I wasted a bullet. He wouldn’t be proud of me. He’d tear me a new one. [He raises the gun and cocks it.] You’re not my dad. [The screen goes black.]
[FADE IN: Rundown Building. DEAN is pointing the gun at JOHN.]
JOHN: Dean, it’s me.
DEAN: I know my dad better than anyone. And you ain’t him.
JOHN: What the hell has gotten into you?
DEAN: I could ask you the same thing. [SAM enters the room.]
SAM: Dean? What the hell is going on?
JOHN: Your brother’s lost his mind.
DEAN: He’s not Dad.
SAM: What?
DEAN: I think he’s possessed. I think he’s been possessed since we rescued him.
JOHN: Don’t listen to him, Sammy.
SAM: Dean, how do you know?
DEAN: He’s different.
JOHN: You know, we don’t have time for this. Sam, you want to kill this demon, you’ve got to trust me. [SAM looks back and forth at JOHN and DEAN.] Sam?
SAM: No. [He shakes his head.] No. [He walks over to DEAN. JOHN begins to cry.]
JOHN: Fine. You’re both so sure? Go ahead. Kill me. [He hangs his head in sadness. DEAN, near tears, lowers the gun.] I thought so. [He looks up. Possessed by the demon, JOHN’s eyes are a fiery orange. Suddenly, SAM and DEAN both get pinned against the walls of the room by an invisible force. They can barely move. JOHN walks over to the Colt and picks it up off the floor.] What a pain in the ass this thing’s been.
SAM: It’s you, isn’t it? We’ve been lookin’ for you for a long time.
JOHN: You found me.
SAM: But the holy water….
JOHN: You think somethin’ like that works on somethin’ like me? [SAM tries to lift his head, but the demon keeps him against the wall.]
SAM: I’m gonna kill you!
JOHN: Oh, that’d be a neat trick. In fact, here. [He places the gun on a nearby table.] Make the gun float to ya there, psychic boy. [SAM is unable to do anything. JOHN chuckles.] Well, this is fun. I could’ve killed you a hundred times today, but this….[He sighs.]….this is worth the wait. [He turns to DEAN.] Your dad? He’s in here with me—trapped inside his own meat suit. He says “hi”, by the way. He’s gonna tear you apart. He’s gonna taste the iron in your blood.
DEAN: Let him go. Or I swear to God—
JOHN: What? What are you and God gonna do? You see, as far as I’m concerned, this is justice. [He moves closer to DEAN.] You know that little exorcism of yours? That was my daughter.
DEAN: Who, Meg?
JOHN: The one in the alley? That was my boy. You understand?
DEAN: You’ve got to be kiddin’ me.
JOHN: What? You’re the only one who can have a family? You destroyed my children. How would you feel if I killed your family? [DEAN says nothing. JOHN smiles wickedly.] Oh, that’s right. I forgot. I did. Still, two wrongs don’t make a right.
DEAN: You son of a bitch.
SAM: I wanna know why. Why’d you do it? [JOHN turns to SAM.]
JOHN: You mean, why’d I kill Mommy and pretty little Jess?
SAM: Yeah.
JOHN: [to DEAN] You know, I never told you this, but Sam was gonna ask her to marry him. Been shoppin’ for rings and everything. [He walks over to SAM.] You wanna know why? Because they got in the way.
SAM: In the way of what?
JOHN: My plans for you, Sammy—you….and all the children like you.
DEAN: Listen….you mind just gettin’ this over with, huh? ‘Cause I really can’t stand the monologuing.
JOHN: [walking back over to DEAN] Funny. But that’s all part of your M.O., isn’t it? Mask all that nasty pain. Mask the truth.
DEAN: Oh, yeah? What’s that?
JOHN: You know, you fight and you fight for this family, but the truth is….they don’t need you. Not like you need them. Sam—he’s clearly John’s favorite. Even when they fight. It’s more concern than he’s ever shown you.
DEAN: I bet you’re real proud of your kids, too, huh? Oh, wait, I forgot. I wasted ‘em. [He smiles weakly. JOHN says nothing, takes a step back, and lowers his head. A moment later, he raises his eyes again. Suddenly, DEAN begins bleeding heavily from the chest. He screams in agony.]
SAM: Dean! No! [DEAN continues to scream as more blood pours out of him.]
DEAN: [pleading] Dad! Dad, don’t you let it kill me! [The bleeding only gets heavier. DEAN cries and moans in pain. Blood begins to pour out of his mouth.]
SAM: Dean! [He grunts, trying to break free from the wall.]
DEAN: Dad, please. [The bleeding stops, but DEAN hangs his head, unconscious.]
SAM: Dean! [JOHN also lowers his eyes.] No!
JOHN: [tearfully] Stop. [He lifts his head. His eyes have returned to normal.] Stop it. [The force holding SAM and DEAN to the wall is released. SAM rushes to the table and grabs the Colt. He points it at JOHN, who has once again been taken over by the demon.] You kill me, you kill Daddy.
SAM: I know. [He shoots JOHN in the leg, and he falls to the floor, unconscious. DEAN also collapses. SAM rushes over to him.] Dean? Hey. Oh, God. you lost a lot of blood.
DEAN: [weakly] Where’s Dad?
SAM: He’s right here. He’s right here, Dean.
DEAN: Go check on him. Go check on him. [SAM goes over to JOHN.] Dad? Dad? [JOHN suddenly wakes up.]
JOHN: Sammy! It’s still alive. It’s inside me. I can feel it. You shoot me. You shoot me! You shoot me in the heart, son! [SAM, with tears in his eyes, raises the gun and cocks it.] Do it, now!
DEAN: Sam, don’t you do it. Don’t you do it.
JOHN: You’ve got to hurry! I can’t hold on to it much longer! You shoot me, son! Shoot me! [SAM is clearly struggling to make a decision.] Son, I’m beggin’ you! We can end this here and now! Sammy!
DEAN: [crying] Sam, no.
JOHN: You do this! Sammy! Sam….[Suddenly, JOHN screams. Just as in MEG’s exorcism, the demon erupts from JOHN’s mouth in a cloud of black smoke. When the demon has left his body, the smoke disappears through the floorboards of the room. JOHN looks at SAM sadly, breathing heavily. All three Winchesters are in tears. The screen goes black.]
[FADE IN: INT. – CAR. SAM is driving. JOHN is in the passenger seat, clearly in pain. DEAN is in the backseat, covered in blood, exhausted.]
SAM: Just hold on, all right? Hospital’s only ten minutes away.
JOHN: I’m surprised at you, Sammy. Why didn’t you kill it? I thought we saw eye to eye on this—killin’ this demon comes first. Before me, before everything. [CRASH. An enormous 18-wheeler semi slams into the side of the Impala, sending it careening off the road. The screen goes black.]
[The scene fades in on the interior of the truck. The driver, whose eyes are coal-black, is clearly possessed. He is staring straight ahead, motionless. The camera pans across the inside of the Impala. Blood and bruises cover the faces of each man in the car. All three Winchesters are unconscious. The screen fades to black.]
