Interview Originale

Q. I've read that you directed a season eight episode called “Blood Brothers”. Do you have plans to direct any other Supernatural episodes this season?

A. It’s the fifth episode of the season, and a really well written episode by Ben Edlund. We get deeper in to the Benny and Dean story and see what that’s turning in to. We’ll see more back-story of Sam and Amelia and what that year was like for Sam without Dean. It was shot in three different styles. Romantic comedy where we start to see how Sam and Amelia become a couple. We see how Benny was before he was sent to Purgatory, and how Dean comes in to his life. And we get in to Purgatory. I kept calling it Vietnam. There were different classes and races of people who came there. They wouldn’t normally be friends, but in battle, they learned to rely on each other or they die.

They have me booked for one at the end of the order, I think it’s episode 20 in March. I’d love to do more, but I’m not the only director around, and they kind of have to spread the love around. I hope the show I did in July and August called Arrow, which is Supernatural’s lead in on the CW, I might be back. It’s the same demographic of fans. It’s a lot darker than Smallville even though it’s a DC comic. It’s treated more like Batman meets The Bourne Identity. It’s darker and about a vigilante. Using bows and arrows and a lot of action. It’s fun because I get to shoot two different styles and it’s always fun.

Q. In regards to Revolution can you leak any juicy spoilers about the overall theme of the show?

A. It’s getting better and better every script. I’m literally finishing up episode eight right now. The reason we shot on Saturday the whole opening sequence is a place that we couldn’t get Monday through Friday. I don’t know how spoilery this is, but the overall theme of the show is family. The ties you have to your family. The overall reaching theme is Charlie trying to reach her brother and what she’ll do to get to him is what she’s going to do. It’s shown through her eyes. Tracy Spiridakos is a stunningly gifted young actress who’s a joy to work with. You’ll see more of the family stuff and it’s a huge ensemble cast. You’ll meet Neville’s wife around episode five or six, but I had a few scenes with her. They’ll keep teasing you with what the pendant does and what it doesn’t do. You’ll see more in flashbacks before we lost power 15 years earlier. Eric Kripke is distancing himself from Supernatural yet there are a lot of similar themes like family and a road trip. Much bigger, broader scope. I’ve seen all the hard work since July pay off as the show’s been picked up.

Q. I understand that you are directing episodes of Revolution and Arrow. I love Revolution so far. Is it easier or more difficult to work on a brand new show versus a well established show?

A. They are different. Even though I’m an established director, Jared and Jensen still want direction from me. They don’t want me to come in and expect me to be on auto-pilot. I tell them to try a version where one is not so angry with the other. Then try a version where they’re a little more passive aggressive and they say oh cool, I hadn’t thought of it that way. Sometimes it works and makes it much more interesting, and sometimes it doesn’t. Generally established productions run smooth on shows that have been going on a few seasons because they have a grove, a pattern, a rhythm. Yet Arrow was surprisingly smooth even though I directed the second episode after the pilot. They were still kind of finding themselves. Shooting on sets where you couldn’t only look one way because they hadn’t finished building the staircase yet, and don’t lean against the walls because they just painted. We love it, we’re putting our heart and soul in to it and busting our asses, and we hope the rest of the world knows it too. The excitement to a new show is that we’re just finding it. There’s no right or wrong answers. My directing style is let’s do three takes let’s do them across the spectrum so in the editing room; we have the material to choose from. You want to match the style of the show, generally you want to come in there, do a solid show, and hope they invite you back later.

Q. Tell me about last season’s Supernatural episode called “Hello, Cruel World.”

A. I think that was a Ben Edlund special and it was something reading that script. In the first few pages we basically say good-bye to Castiel. That was kind of interesting I thought of the fans are going to hate me because in my episode, which I didn’t write but directed, I’m gonna kill off beloved character. But of course, nobody ever dies on Supernatural.

Q. I'm going to end with what's become my signature question. If you were a baseball player, what would your walk up song be?

A. I’m sort of a classic ‘70’s hard rock kind of person. There’s a band I listen to non-stop that’s like if Led Zepplin, Bad Company, Aerosmith, and Black Sabbath had a baby. The band is called Rival Sons and I listen to them in between takes and they’re my inspirational music.
